Sometimes we don’t get the encouragement we need from others.  Either we don’t let people know we need encouragement or others don’t follow through with it when we do let our need be known.  We have an amazing ability to actually encourage ourselves.  This concept is not as silly as it sounds.  You see, our bodies don’t know the difference between what is real and what is imagined.  This truth is the reason why we feel panicky just thinking about things we worry about.  Therefore, it’s possible to accomplish real benefit physically by using our mind (our imagination) in a helpful way.  To encourage ourselves, we simply tell ourselves the things we need to hear.  We, basically, talk to ourselves.  We do not have to do this thing verbally.  It works just as well mentally.  Practice encouraging yourself using a variety of phrases until you find the ones that work for you.  Try it!

Personally, I find it better to use the word “you” when encouraging myself rather than the word “I”.  In my mind, I am imagining these encouraging statements being said to me by another person because, really, that’s what I want to happen.

God loves you.

You can do this.

You are capable.

You can handle it.

This too shall pass.

You can get through this.

If others can do it then you can do it.

You’ve done it before you can do it again.

If anyone in the world has been able to do it then you can do it too.
