Save me from my friends! (Dictionary of English Proverbs/Thomas Preston)

Goodness!  Haven’t we all thought this at one time or another?  Isn’t it true that sometimes the most stress, hardship, hurt, and deceit comes from people who call themselves our friends?  Do we not all have people come into our lives and befriend us because they need or want something from us?  We all have “friends” that we never, ever hear from unless they are in trouble or want us for something.  Sure, friends help each other but that’s not ALL they do.  A friendship is about both people who like each other and enjoy each other’s company.  If a friend never calls you when they have good news (even though they call others with good news), they may not be a real friend.
