BATTLE BETWEEN GHOSTS

While we are immersed in our own thoughts we cannot recognize the reality of other people’s needs, we do not see the other person at all as he is; all we see is a being who is or is not meeting our requirements.  For this reason most domestic dissension is a battle between ghosts.  Neither husband nor wife is loving, or hating the real other, only an illusion, a projection of his or her personal wishes or resentments.  (J. Neville Ward, THE USE OF PRAYING)
