Sometimes we find ourselves in situations where we are communicating with someone who is angry.  The individual may not be angry with us in particular although they might be.  Here are some ways to respond that might help.  These responses are assuming the person is not physically threatening towards you or anyone else.

  • Allow for plenty of personal space for you and the other person
  • Stand sideways not full facing
  • Talk softer if a verbal response is expected
  • Say as little as possible otherwise
  • Avoid asking questions or offering a solution or idea
  • Agree with what they are saying whenever you can honestly agree
  • Remain silent on points of disagreement or obvious errors in logic
  • Listen completely to what they are saying providing your full attention
  • Do your best to validate their feelings and right to express themselves
